About the Book
The Sudanese Personality: Between Reality and Legend by Dr. Adil Abdelaziz Hamid offers a multidimensional analysis of the Sudanese personality and identity, tracing their historical, social, and cultural roots and examining the forces that have shaped them over time. The book begins with a central question: can one speak of a single, unifying Sudanese personality in a society marked by ethnic, tribal, linguistic, and cultural diversity? It explores how Arab and African components, together with Sudan’s religious, historical, and social heritage, have interacted to form a distinctive Sudanese identity.
Combining analysis, essays, testimonies, personal accounts, and social observations, the author draws on the views of a number of researchers, thinkers, and writers who have addressed the Sudanese character. The book highlights values commonly associated with Sudanese society, including generosity, solidarity, chivalry, hospitality, and strong family ties, while also critically examining certain social attitudes and behavioural patterns that, in the author’s view, require further reflection and study, particularly in the context of migration, expatriation, and interaction with other societies.
The book goes beyond description to present the study of the Sudanese personality as a gateway to thinking about Sudan’s future and the construction of an inclusive national identity. It calls for transforming diversity into a source of strength, reinforcing citizenship, education, responsibility, discipline, tolerance, and national belonging, while preserving positive cultural values and addressing harmful social tendencies. Through its combination of history, sociology, culture, and lived experience, the book invites readers to reconsider Sudanese identity with greater depth, openness, and critical awareness.
